Flying Into Europe? What You Can Bring Without Paying Duty

EU arrival allowances for alcohol, tobacco and gifts are lower than many travelers expect. Here's the simple breakdown before you load up at your departure airport.

Travelers flying into Europe often stock up on duty-free spirits or cigarettes at their departure airport, then get surprised at the arrival hall. EU allowances for travelers coming from outside the EU are lower than many expect. Here's a simple breakdown.

Goods allowance

Travelers arriving by air from outside the EU can typically bring in goods worth up to €430 without paying duty. That limit covers things like clothes, gifts, perfume and electronics bought outside the EU. Children often have lower limits in some countries.

This is per person. Unlike the US rule, you generally can't pool allowances across a family to cover one expensive item.

Alcohol

Typical limits for adults:

  • 1 liter of spirits over 22 percent alcohol, or 2 liters of fortified wine or similar under 22 percent
  • 4 liters of still wine
  • 16 liters of beer

These are separate from the €430 goods limit.

Tobacco

Typically 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars, or an equivalent combination. Some EU countries set lower limits for travelers from certain neighboring countries.

Moving within the EU

Once you're inside the EU, moving between countries is very different. You can carry goods for personal use without these limits, though very large quantities may raise questions.

What happens if you go over

Use the red channel ("goods to declare") and pay the duty and VAT due. Walking through the green channel with too much can lead to fines and seizure.

Food rules

Meat and dairy from outside the EU are generally banned. Yes, that includes the beef jerky in your carry-on. Some exceptions exist for small amounts of certain foods, but meat and dairy are mostly a no.

Practical tips

  • Check the country you land in. Some have stricter tobacco rules.
  • Keep receipts for expensive items you brought from home, especially electronics, to avoid questions.
  • Don't buy more alcohol than your allowance at your departure duty free just because it's cheap.

Where to plan

Heinemann's European shops let you browse what you might buy on departure. Dubai Duty Free, DFS and King Power are useful if you're flying into Europe from Asia or the Middle East.

Verdict

Remember €430 for goods, 1 liter of spirits and 200 cigarettes as rough guides, and check the country you're landing in. Duty free at departure doesn't mean duty free on arrival.
